Jolt: A rural noir
Roberta M Roy

Available at AlvaPressInc.com and Amazon.com

Jolt: A rural noir is the epic story of how a mix of Townees and the Newees cope with the change forced upon them by a vaguely described distant nuclear event. There is artist Theodore Wamp, who, at the time of the event, is already trying to change so his beloved Natalie will want him again. There is Martha a retired librarian recently relocated to Locklee from metropolitan Aesopolis and busy rebuilding her life. And there are the Matters boys from Ariana who, knowing that their parents cannot make it back in time to guide them are forced to take to the road alone.

Having escaped a meltdown, arson, and dirty bombs and the mass confusion that rules the area around the Magdum Heights nuclear power plant for miles around, this motley mix flee to the mountains and settle in the lakeside mountain village of Locklee in the northern most reaches this fictional tri-state North American area. Among those who flee to the mountains, a couple of thousand overrun Locklee, a village located some two hundred miles north. Locklee's population triples from a thousand to near three. Some who arrive are ill with radiation sickness.  Many have lost everything. All need deconning, food and housing.  Winter is coming and the infrastructure is not prepared to support this influx of families and lost souls.

Roberta M Roy's Blog

On Nuclear Survival

Writer Publisher's and Roberta M. Roy's blogs are updated at least once or twice a week.

Updates to the nuclear blog are less regular.

"Following 9/11, fear and ignorance encouraged me to participate in one hundred face-to-face hours of study with the United States Military culminating in a course on the Medical Effects of Ionizing Radiation taught by the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) in Bethesda, MD. There, I became inspired to write Jolt," explains Roberta M. Roy, speech-language pathologist and author of Jolt: a rural noir.

Roy is currently researching to write Too Close, the companion novel to Jolt. Whereas Jolt's key characters are too distant from ground zero to be personally physically affected, in Too Close Roy will explore survival for a person with radiation sickness. Her intent in doing so is to share the story of a woman who is successfully cared for in a home setting. In the event of a real nuclear event, it is theorized that hospitals would be overrun and home care would of necessity become the rule of the day.

I met Lorna Tychostup after a presentation on her photo journalism on the Iraq War. She wanted us to understand the human side of life in Iraq for Iraquis. As a result of my interest in furthering Lorna's message, I established a simple friendship with her. Little did I Know at the time that a year or so hence I would be contacting her for an editor. When I did, she explained that as a news editor, she did not edit books. Instead she recommended me to Joan Schweighardt, my painstakingly kind and thorough editor. What a wonderful, serendipitous stroke of luck that was.
I couldn't have done it without Joan.

After much search! When I was sure I would never find the best image I recalled some pictures my niece, Kristi Paonessa, had taken. And as a result I chose one of her photographs as Jolt's cover image.Very exciting. I love it.

It was Joan who recommended me to Kathi Massaro who then worked her cover
and text design magic.

Eh, voila!
Gotta love it.

A well-researched novel, Jolt took more than five years for Roy to research and write. Its focus, survival after a nuclear terrorist event in an imaginary part of the United States, is timely and informative yet filled with action, passion, and a cast of characters that will leave you looking to read Too Close.
